After six months of workshops, mentorship, research, discovery and creation, I have completed my sound piece for the Centre for Art Tapes Media Art Scholarship Program. The piece is called Drum Voices, and it will be presented Tuesday, February 10, 2015 at the Bus Stop Theatre alongside works created by the other scholars.
Drum Voices is a sound piece that transports the drum to a place before time. By recording a single strike of a deer-hide frame drum and then using simple audio processing techniques, I journeyed to the heart of a drum to find a hidden choir that speaks to our origins. Both terrestrial and alien sounding, the voices have been arranged to unfold as a mantra – an eternal song of slow and rhythmic chanting – creating an evocative environment for deep listening.
Tickets for the event are $10 regular/ $8 students in advance, or $12/$10 at the door. You can buy them in advance at the Centre for Art Tapes | 2238 Maitland St, Halifax or at Venus Envy | 1598 Barrington St, Halifax.
