I'll be DJ-ing at OBEY Convention VII in Halifax this year during the Halifax Rumi Ensemble and Julianna Barwick show at the Maritime Conservatory of Performing Arts on Sunday, May 25. I'm really honoured to be providing a sonic environment to transition between these two incredible artists.
Here's a Q&A I did with OBEY about my set and DJ-ing in general: click here.
My DJ set will be loop based, combining analogue and digital technologies to map a sonic transformation. Stemming from my shamanic drumming research, I’ve been really into repetition in sound and music these days, and making patient alterations so the sounds gradually inhabit new environments, and parallel universes.
OBEY is the best thing to happen in Halifax every year, so if you haven't yet, check out their website and buy some tickets and/or a pass.
Since the Fall of 2013 I have been co-teaching RHYTHM, a DJ/music program to youth at an organization called reachAbility. I've been finding it really rewarding because I not only get to teach something I'm passionate about, but I also learn so much from the students and my fellow DJs. I'm reminded on a daily basis how vital music is, not only as an escape, but as an authentic tool for self-expression, awareness and engagement with the world.
reachAbility is inclusive of, not exclusive of, persons with disabilities. We are dedicated to equalizing the playing field for anyone facing barriers in their life, including youth. RHYTHM aims to provide youth with knowledge and skills essential to DJ-ing and understanding music, but also focusses on personal growth through self-awareness activities in a fun and supportive environment.
I'm really happy to share that my friend and collaborator Jesse Frank Matthews (aka JFM) will begin co-facilitating the program with me this month. Presently we're working on re-vamping the program a bit, and we're really excited to launch the new and improved RHYTHM later this month.
If you know anyone between the ages of 16 and 25 who'd be interested in such a program, get in touch.
