The Centre for Art Tapes is pleased to announce a presentation of Aboriginal media art at the Mi’kmaw Native Friendship Centre on Monday, March 30, 2015. Curated by artist Lindsay Dobbin, the works selected for the CFAT Aboriginal Media Arts Screening were either created at CFAT, with CFAT’s support or by its membership — spanning the 35 year history of the artist-run, media arts organization. The event will begin at 7:30 p.m. with a presentation of media art works by Aboriginal artists including Cheryl L’Hirondelle, Zachery Longboy, Mike McDonald, Catherine Martin, Alan Syliboy, Tina Young and students of the We’koqma’q Mikmaw School in Whycocomagh, Nova Scotia.
Following the screening, a communal discussion will take place where artists will converse with the public about the importance of media art in Aboriginal self-representation. Carla Taunton, assistant professor of Indigenous arts and visual culture at NSCAD University, and Mi’kmaq artists Alan Syliboy, Ursula A. Johnson and Tina Young will be present, as well as others.
Both the screening and the roundtable intend to encourage further media arts production in the Aboriginal community in Halifax and Nova Scotia.
